Origin, Character, Tempo, Appendix
The multiple bounce roll is the closest possible substitution for a sustained note on a drum. It is performed by pressing the stick into the playing surface, resulting in a ‘buzz’ sound. The object is to connect the sound from stroke to stroke to create a seamless sustained roll.
This rudiment is used predomently to establish the correct amount of strokes that are put into a closed roll. Although not often seen in British military music the majority of rolls will be played closed unless stated otherwise and therefore written as per the doubles family. There are some study pieces used within the RMSoM that explore this method of writing closed rolls. In addition this notation could dictate a crushed roll.
