Origin, Character, Tempo, Appendix

The Thirteen Stroke Roll is another double stroke rudiment meant to produce a “sustained sound” within a musical phrase.  The Thirteen Stroke roll is often thought of as a ‘sixtuplet’ roll.  When thought of in a traditional context, the Thirteen Stroke Roll is sometimes used as a replacement rudiment for Fifteen Stroke Rolls when a drum march is played at faster tempos.

Used in the military for longer rolls but at a quicker tempo where a full fifteen stroke roll would feel too compact and unnatural.  The example shows the thirteen stroke roll being used in Thomas Arnes, Rule Britannia as a musical salute to Royal Naval Admirals.

In Switzerland the Thirteen Stroke Roll, Hand to Hand is classified as a Stroke Roll, more accurately assigned to the rudiment family “Stroke Roll Rudiments Hand to Hand”. This is because the rudiment is played continuously (without any rest) and its main strokes switch from left to right and vice versa. Throughout the continuous acceleration from 30 quarters per minute until tempo 76, the rudiment must be kept rhythmical: the double strokes (rolls) must be played in an easy and open way until to the practice in high speed. The accent on the major strokes emphasizes the rhythm and distinguishes various Stroke Roll Rudiments.

The Thirteen Stroke Roll (Hand to Hand) in its natural form is not often found in modern drumming. If so, the main strokes have another value than simply a quarter. This influences the double strokes, which are played more openly (or tightly), resulting in a different sound and drum feeling.

Il existe dans la technique française mais jamais appelé ainsi, car considéré simplement comme un roulement.
