The Stroke of Three is well known in Switzerland, linked to the Ordonnance drumming and hence assigned to the “Ordonnance Rudiment Family”. It is important to play the crescendo as written, starting with a piano flam and ending with a forte stroke on the other hand. The starting tempo is 60 quarters per minute and the rudiment is ended in a tempo as fast as 120. Throughout this acceleration, the sixteenth-notes must be kept rhythmical. Most difficult is to avoid arhythmicality (do not contract the double strokes!) and to still have a perfect crescendo. Another challenge is the piano flam which is often played too wide or too tightly.
The Stroke of Three can be found in its natural practice structure and occurs often in ordonnance marches. In older marches, it is often notated without the crescendo and mostly onbeat.
