Origin, Character, Tempo, Appendix

The Single Paradiddle is a very common rudiment in the American Style.  The unique sticking facilitates a smooth sound when playing groups of four notes hand to hand.  The rudiment is written with an accent on the first note and taps for the rest of the notes.  Focus should be on an even rhythm throughout the rudiment, as well as a clear distinction between the accents and the taps.

This rudiment is taught and explored early on in the RMSoM.  Probably the most common rudiment found.  With an accent on the 1st of every 4 strokes. The key to making this rudiment sounding nice and even is by keeping the 2 strokes on the same hand as separate as the single strokes.  Found within an array of pieces and can be utilised to switch leading hands.

In the Swiss rudimental classification system, the Single Paradiddle has not been linked to any playstyle and hence is assigned to “more rudiments”. Left and right marcato strokes should be played equally mezzoforte and the others equally piano. Swiss literature states that the difficulties of playing the Single Paradiddle are in rhythm and stick control as the double strokes should not be contracted.

In Swiss drumming, the single Paradiddle appears in many different note values. Most common is its notation in sixteenth-note rhythm.
