Origin, Character, Tempo, Appendix

The Single Flammed Mill is a lesser used rudiment in American rudimental drumming literature, partly due to its difficulty, and also its similarity in texture to the Flam Paradiddle.  The difference in sticking, however, gives this rudiment a unique feel and flow in execution.  The player should be careful to maintain a loose feel in the hands when playing the Single Flammed Mill, as over gripping the sticks can result in an overly staccato timbre.  This rudiment can be difficult to execute at higher tempos due to the complex rhythm each hand is playing.  Breaking down this rudiment slowly and understanding what each hand is doing is crucial to achieving proper understanding.

Very similar in structure to the Flam Paradiddle the Mill stroke is essencially the reverse.  With a double stroke being played first, followed by two single strokes.  The start of each four strokes has a Flam in order to emphasise the start of the rudiment.  This is quite a complex rudiment and is introduced in training quite late on.  You need to be careful that the first two stokes remain as even as the single strokes that follow.
