The Flammed Nine Stroke Roll is classified in Switzerland as a Stroke Roll, more accurately assigned to the rudiment family “Onbeat Stroke Roll Rudiments”. This is because that rudiment has a rest and there are two major strokes important: the first starting onbeat, defining how many double strokes have to be played and coincidently how long it takes. (in this example: one quarter and 8 double strokes) The second major stroke is defined as a final stroke, finishing the Flammed Nine Stroke roll.
Throughout the continuous acceleration from 120 quarters per minute until tempo 120 the rudiment must be kept rhythmical. The Swiss literature analyzed multiple challenges faced playing the Flammed Five Stroke Roll:
– The Flam package with a double stroke is difficult to play: The flam is sometimes played too tightly. It has to be open, that it is hearable, yet not so open that it sounds like a double stroke. Not accentuate the first double stroke and not contracting nor dropping the second stroke are key.
– Throughout its acceleration, the acceleration is only made during the 7 rests. Whilst playing the figure (major strokes), keep rhythm.
The Flammed Five Stroke Roll often occurs in marches in its natural practice pattern. In modern Swiss drumming, it is mentioned as a “soft” stroke roll, meaning that the whole figure should be played as soft and openly as possible, since there is a double stroke as initial stroke and no accentuation.
