In Switzerland, the Flammed Five Stroke Roll, Hand to Hand is classified as a Stroke Roll, more accurately assigned to the rudiment family “Upbeat Stroke Roll Rudiments”. This is because that rudiment has a rest and the ending major stroke is most important: it is onbeat, and the small gracing note defines how many double strokes have to be played until this major stroke. Coincidently, the grace note also defines when to start the double strokes. (in this example: one eighth-note before the major stroke)

Throughout the continuous acceleration from 30 quarters per minute until tempo 120 the rudiment must be kept rhythmical. The Swiss literature analyzed multiple challenges faced playing the Flammed Five Stroke Roll:

– The Flam is difficult to play: It sometimes is played too tightly. The Flam has to be open, that it is hearable, yet not so open that it sounds like a double stroke. Additionally, it must be played pianissimo.

– The crescendo is played with double strokes; therefore, a great technique is necessary.

– Throughout its acceleration, the acceleration is only made during the 3 rests. Whilst playing the figure (major strokes), keep rhythm.

The Flammed Five Stroke Roll in its natural practice pattern often occurs in marches or is included in other rudiments.
