Origin, Character, Tempo, Appendix

The Flamacue is often a highly stylized and distinctive rudiment in the American Fife and Drum style.  Characterized by its quick upstroked accent after the inital low flam, this rudiment adds a frequently used syncopated sound to many traditional drum parts. The inital flam should be played low, with the primary stroke being only slightly higher than the grace note.  The phrase ‘rudimental swing’ is sometimes used when describing the quick whipping of the left handed accent to acheive a full sound on the second note.  The following two alternating taps should be played low and at the same dynamic level.

The Flamacue is introduced at level 5 in the RMSoM syllabus and can be quite tricky to achieve. Focus is drawn to the accent that follows the first flam with the aim of keeping the dynamic level the same throughout other than this accent.  This rudiment changes hand everytime it is played.  It can be seen in many study pieces and used occasionally in drum statics and solos.
