Origin, Character, Tempo, Appendix
The Flam Drag is one rudiment that has carried on through even the more modern styles of American rudimental drumming. It is derived from the Flam Accent, but changes the second note to a double, or a “drag.” It is important to keep the grace note of the initial flam low, so the stick doesn’t have to be controlled down to play the drag on the same hand afterwards. All notes in the Flam Drag, with exception to the accented primary stroke at the beginning of each repetition, should be played at tap level.
The Flam Drag follows a similar form to the Flam Accent. Written in simple time, using a triplet feel we replace the middle of the triplet with a double stroke (drag). With an acented flam on the start of every triplet all other notes are played at the same dynamic. Care should be take when playing at a higher tempo to ensure an eveness accross the whole rudiment.
