Origin, Character, Tempo, Appendix

The Drag (or Ruff) is the base rudiment for the Drag family.  The Drag is played with two low gracenotes before the primary accented stroke.  Similar to the Flam, the gracenotes should be played close enough to the primary stroke that they sound like an embelishment, but not so wide that they sound like their own rhythm.  Spacing between the gracenotes can vary from style to style, but their primary purpose should always be that of an embelishment.

Similar to the Flam, the Drag is used to emphasis a note by playing two grace notes close to the main note. Making it sound wide by either playing the grace notes closed or alternativley open, but not too much as they sound like an anacrusis to the object note. The drag is used very regluar accross all Royal Marines repertoire.
