The Stroke of Märmeli is well known in Switzerland, often linked to the Basler drumming and hence assigned to the “Basler Rudiment Family”. It is important to play the accents mezzoforte and piano strokes piano. The starting tempo is 60 quarters per minute, in the passage phase the rhythmical feeling changes into the practice structure and finally the rudiment is ended in a tempo as fast as 100. Throughout this acceleration, the triplets must be kept rhythmical. In the practice structure, the grace note is not evenly distributed between the main strokes. The typical Basler sound is achieved by pausing before the grace note.
It is seldomly seen in Swiss drum literature, however, it occurs in some Basler marches in its natural practice form. The rudiment became popular with its utilisation and invention in the march “Märmeli”.
