Origin, Character, Tempo, Appendix

The Seventeen Stroke Roll is an extended roll rudiment that is often applied to two full beats.  As shown in the example above, a common use for this rudiment is within a ‘roll-off’ that begins a piece of music.  The Seventeen Stroke Roll is less than common in traditional drumming music.

Probably one of the most common rolls found within military music.  Not only is the 17 stroke roll applied within drum solos and various other pieces, every military march played by the Royal Marines will start with two 3 beat rolls which are 17 stroke.

The 17 Stroke roll can not be found in Swiss Drum literature as a rudiment.

Il existe dans la technique française mais jamais appelé ainsi, car considéré simplement comme un roulement.
