Origin, Character, Tempo, Appendix

The Seven Stroke Roll is plays a pivotal role in traditional American rudimental drumming.  It especially prevelent in Ancient Fife & Drum music.  The rudiment is often applied similar to a Five Stroke Roll, at the beginning of the phrase as a pick up note.  The Seven Stroke Roll is often played starting from a soft dynamic and crescendos throughout.

Very similar to the 5 stroke roll however the 7 stroke puts you on the other hand. Adding the extra double enables the player to demonstrate a fuller sounding, short roll that canswitch hands during faster pieces.  Commonly seen in marching drum solos.

The Seven Stroke Roll is classified in Switzerland as a Stroke Roll, more accurately assigned to the rudiment family “Stroke Roll Rudiments Single-Sided”. This is because the rudiment is played continuously (without any rest) and its main strokes never switch the hand: Therefore, the rudiment can be played either, right- or left-handed

(main strokes). Throughout the continuous acceleration from 30 quarters per minute until tempo 120 the rudiment must be kept rhythmical: the double strokes (rolls) must be played in an easy and open way until to the practice in high speed. Furthermore, the accent on the major strokes emphasizes the rhythm and distinguishes various Stroke Roll Rudiments.

The Seven Stroke Roll occurs in some marches but naturally in compositions.

Le ra de 7 se retrouve généralement joué main droite (commençant main gauche) dans les marches traditionnelles. On le retrouve désormais main gauche dans le répertoire moderne.
