Origin, Character, Tempo, Appendix

The Five Stroke roll is often implemented as the beginning of a phrase, or as connective tissue within a musical idea.  It has many different applications and is one of the more commonly used rudiments in military band style marches, as well as modern drum corps in the US.

The shortest of the doubles family and often use in quaver form.  Commonly seen as an anacrusis to a piece or a pick up beat within a bar. Found in many military drum solos and marches.

The Five Stroke Roll, Hand to Hand is classified in Switzerland as a Stroke Roll, more accurately assigned to the rudiment family “Stroke Roll Rudiments Hand to Hand”. This is because the rudiment is played continuously (without rest) and its main strokes switches from left to right and vice versa. The Swiss literature analyzed this fact as the biggest challenge: Throughout the continuous acceleration from 30 quarters per minute until tempo 96, the rudiment must be kept rhythmical: the double strokes (rolls) should be played in an easy and open way until to the practice in high speed. Furthermore, the accent on the major strokes emphasizes the rhythm and distinguishes various Stroke Roll Rudiments.

The Five Stroke Roll (Hand to Hand) often occurs in marches in its natural practice pattern or is included in other rudiments. In the 6/8-time signatures as well as in compositions, its main strokes often value dotted eighth notes and hence the double strokes (rolls) are played more openly.
